Bike Tour Day 3 - Cressier to Bienne

The third day turns out to be alot of biking! We end up finding a last minute room in a hotel last night in Cressier, (another medieval town with a castle) just next to Le Landeron. We bike like mad to reach le Landeron just before the clouds burst in a big downpoar…

There is a stretch of land in between the two lakes called the Seeland Region. This goes on for quite a few kms and we are happy to finally reach the Lake of Bienne on the other side. There is also a nice canal connecting the two lakes that many boats take to pass from one side to the other. From Erlach (the 1st town on the Bienne Lakeside with the Bernese castle) we visit the half island of St. Peter. It seems to be a real pilgrimmage to get there, passing hoards of people on foot going the same way. This whole are is well protected and there are wide strips of marshland (as well as most of the southern coast of Lake Neuchâtel). On the half island there is an old monastery that has been turned into a historical hotel and restaurant.

From here we notice the change of language… we have reached the swiss german side! We notice too that there seems to be alot more people on bikes here all equiped with helmets, biking tops and shorts, gloves, shoes and glasses (and everyone is dressed the same!) We pass by many beautiful villages with big old farmhouses (where the house and barn are connected) with slanting roofs that seem to touch the ground. Numerous yellow mustard seeds and lilac bushes line the bike path. Cows are grazing in the fields and curiously watch us pass by. Somehow biking in this area makes you feel like you are in another country! Suddenly we stand in front of a bike sign intersection. We have the choice of either continuing on to Estavayer, Bern, Murten, Solothurn or Bienne! Our final destination of the day will be Bienne from where we hope to book room for our bike back to Geneva.
