Here is a short entry while preparing further texts about the trip to Indonesia.
Below are some of the practical words we use while traveling in Indonesia. It is a fairly simple language and it is fun to learn new words to be able to speak with the locals. We had actually picked up about 300 words (and were able to form small sentences) the last time we were here for 3 months... Somehow it is a language you simply do not forget!
Salamat pagi = Good Morning Salamat siang = Good Day (between 10h00 and 12h00)
Salamat sore = Good Afternoon (between 12h00 and 15h00)
Salamat malam = Good Evening (after it gets dark around 18h00)
Salalmat tidur = Good Night
Apa kabar? = How are you?
(This is actually a phrase that you are not supposed to use in Indonesia, as it usually means how are you and your family… and as you probably do not know people that close while traveling…). We did not know this until our current trip when someone explained it to us.
Siapa nama anda? = What is your name? Nama saya… = My name is...
Saya tidak mengerti = I do not undertstand
Saya mengerti sedikit-sedikit = I understand a little
Sampai jumpa nanti = See you later
Boleh minta …? Do you have…?
panas/dingin = Hot/Cold
air minum = Drinking Water
ma’af = Sorry
berapa? = How much?
Terima kasih = Thank you
ja/tidak = yes/no
