Flowers and Hiking

We spend a full day hiking in the region. The trail begins at the Pass (2473 m) to Col des Cheveux (2551 m) and on to Col des Bastillon (2761 m). I am a bit surprised to still see big patches of snow here in July compared to last weekend where it was unbearably hot. It makes quite a difference. There are lovely flowers everywhere, I have come at the right season! Todays hike will be shorter than usual, due to our late departure.

After 5 hours of hiking we find a nice spot to camp by the Lacs des FenĂȘtres (or Window Lakes). This time there is no problem at all to find drinking water due to all the streams from the melting glaciers flowing in the lakes. The bigges lake is cristal clear and very inviting for a swim, but also icy cold. I can’t muster enough courage to go in… Just in time we set up the tent before the thick dark grey clouds open with rain. The funny things is that just after we are done… the rain lets up again! We are lucky to be able to eat outside with a nice sunshine before calling it a night.

The next morning we have breakfast in the sun. Just as we are taking down the tent it begins to rain again!!! We had opted for a longer hike today over some other passes and down to a valley, but due to the uncertain weather condition we decide to head back to the Pass and visit the Saint Bernard dog museum. It was probably the best decision, because it ends up raining
non stop for the next 3 hours!

Just before reaching the Pass we cross the Italian border into Switzerland and arrive at our point of departure again…Soaked to the bone and icy cold we order a soup to warm us up again before taking a bus back down to the valley.
